Dylan Dog, the cult-favorite supernatural detective comic, has spent the last 18 months in cinematic limbo. First, original director David R. Ellis (Final Destination) bowed out, then production relocated from London to Louisiana. But despite the setbacks, the project is finally back on track and set to begin filming soon in New Orleans.

Now under the direction of TMNT‘s Kevin Munroe, the film will star Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) as Dylan Dog, Sam Huntington (Jungle 2 Jungle) as Marcus, Dylan’s loyal (and undead) sidekick, and Taye Diggs (Equilibrium) as Dylan’s suave vampire nemesis.

Quick sidebar:

  1. Sam Huntington is basically Paul Dano with blond hair. Google it and see.
  2. Equilibrium is one of the most underrated action movies ever made. Do yourself a favor and stream it, preferably on a day off with blackout curtains and popcorn.

That said, just because The Dark Knight blew the roof off the box office doesn’t mean every comic book needs a film adaptation. Watchmen was beautifully ambitious and visually impressive, but it was also a lot. There’s no shame in revisiting the graphic novel instead of powering through the film’s dense, three-hour runtime.

And can we maybe cool it with the vampires? Just because Twilight and True Blood printed money doesn’t mean every action movie needs a bloodsucker subplot. For what it’s worth, Twilight was more of a slow-burn romance with fangs than a full-on vampire flick anyway.

  1. I don’t need to elaborate further on your genius, Danger, since the film will be mediocre at best, given the cast. I just want to draw attention to the fact that the move you chose to associate with Taye Diggs was “Equilibrium”. Can you get any more obscure or awesome?

  2. Well I’m not sure about the Kevin Munroe film, but Dellamorte Dellamore is an earlier cult film based on the work of the same Italian comic book writer (and scored the coup of castin Rupert Everett, whom Dylan Dog is visually based upon).

Well worth your time checking out. Plus no Twilight vamps, or vamps of any other kind. Just down and dirty zombies.
