By now, most people have written off Land of the Lost as the first major flop of the summer. And sure, if we’re just talking box office numbers, that might be fair. But in terms of sheer laughs, I’d argue it’s the funniest movie of the season so far. I’ve seen it twice in theaters, and it only got better the second time I watched it.
If you’re not typically a Will Ferrell fan, this one might seem like a tough sell. But even if his usual brand of comedy isn’t your thing, Danny McBride delivers scene after scene of unexpected brilliance that might just win you over. I won’t keep campaigning too hard, though. Let’s talk plot.
Dr. Rick Marshall (Ferrell) is a disgraced quantum physicist whose wild theories have made him a laughing stock. As he hits rock bottom, he meets Holly, an eager young scientist who believes in his work and pushes him to complete a time travel device. They eventually team up with Will Stanton (played immaculately by Danny McBride), a roadside attraction operator who unwittingly helps them open a portal to a strange parallel universe.
What follows is a bizarre and hilarious adventure filled with outlandish creatures, surreal landscapes and a very weird primate named Chaka (played by Lonely Island‘s Jorma Taccone). The gags are wild, unpredictable, and at times completely absurd—in the best way possible.
I won’t spoil the surprises, but if you enjoy oddball humor, clever slapstick and some inspired comedic performances, don’t let the negative buzz steer you away. Give it a shot. This movie might not be perfect, but it absolutely delivers on the laughs.
This is officially my new comfort movie.
