Youth in Revolt by C.D. Payne has been one of my favorite books since I was technically young enough to relate to all the hormonal angst and romantic delusion it serves up. It’s less of a coming-of-age story and more of a survival guide for anyone—teen or adult—stumbling through crushes, poor decision-making and the full emotional minefield that is growing up.
Now, this beloved gem has been adapted into a movie starring Michael Cera (fresh off his Superbad fame) and Steve Buscemi. And honestly? I’m excited and terrified. This book is sacred to me. I reread it twice a year, without fail. It’s basically my Catcher in the Rye, but with more awkwardness and arson. So yes, I’m protective.
My nerves were only made worse after Sunday’s viewing of Year One, which did not exactly fill me with confidence.
Still, I believe in second chances—and I’ll absolutely be giving Youth in Revolt a fair shot when it hits theaters this fall. Fingers crossed the film can capture at least a fraction of the book’s unique brilliance, and not just reduce it to another quirky teen romantic comedy. I’m rooting for Cera to redeem himself and for Nick Twisp to get the on-screen treatment he deserves.
