I have a real scoop to share, but first, some context.
I love RocknRolla with a passion. It’s one of Guy Ritchie’s most entertaining films, with all the gritty, stylish gangster energy that made movies like Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels so iconic.
The cast is stacked: Gerard Butler as the fast-talking One Two, Idris Elba as the effortlessly cool Mumbles, Tom Hardy as the unexpectedly charming Handsome Bob and Mark Strong doing what he does best, stealing every scene. And don’t even get me started on the soundtrack. It’s perfect.
At the end of the film, fans were rewarded with a promise:
“Johnny, Archy and the Wild Bunch will be back in The Real RocknRolla.”
Naturally, I took that to heart and held out hope for the sequel.
It’s been years since the movie was released, but us fans remained hopeful as Ritchie turned his attention to his big-budget Sherlock Holmes franchise with Robert Downey Jr. Those movies had their moments, but they didn’t scratch the same itch. They weren’t RocknRolla.
And now, after years of wondering, it’s finally time to let the dream go.
A few days ago, I decided to tweet Idris Elba, who plays Mumbles in the film, and ask him if we’d ever get The Real RocknRolla.
To my surprise, he replied almost immediately:
“no I don’t think so. Sorry”
As much as I appreciated the honesty, that response stung hard. I had always hoped we’d get another chapter with The Wild Bunch. I wanted more shady deals, ridiculous nicknames, unexpected shootouts and the unpredictable energy that made RocknRolla such a ride.
Rest in peace, Wild Bunch.
You deserved a trilogy.
