First off, I want you to watch Fight or Flight in the theater because it is a fast-paced, funny action comedy with inventive kills and an extraordinary antihero performance from Josh Hartnett. And now I’m gonna tell you about the movie and explain why it’s worth your time.

Thanks to AMC Screen Unseen, I caught an early screening of this film in a crowded theater, and it was so much fun. There’s something extra special about cringing at gory and incredibly goofy assassin kills and laughing at cheesy post-kill jokes with an audience that is all the way bought in.

But before Nicole Kidman or whatever movie theater ad person comes on screen to highlight the magic of the movies, I’m gonna need you to forget everything you know about aviation safety, international travel, the TSA, the laws of gravity and the limits of the human body so you can really enjoy this violent, silly movie.

Okay, with that out of the way, what’s it about?

Fight or Flight is an action comedy directed by James Madigan (Iron Man 2, The Meg). In the high-octane flick, Josh Hartnett stars as Lucas Reyes, a disgraced ex-FBI agent on the run after a critical mission goes sideways. Now blacklisted and stuck on the no-fly list, he’s hiding out in Thailand, drinking his feelings and trying (and failing) to stay off the radar.

When we meet him, he’s rocking a blue Hawaiian shirt and a semi-tragic blonde dye job. He looks like Leonardo DiCaprio’s Romeo—if Romeo were 45, completely over it, and in a deeply one-sided relationship with whiskey and cigarettes. You see it, right?

Then comes the job: He’s asked to get on a commercial flight from Bangkok to San Francisco, identify and protect a mysterious figure known only as “The Ghost.”If he succeeds, his honor will be restored, and he’ll be free to move about the world. The catch? Pretty much everyone else on the plane is an assassin looking to kill “The Ghost” to secure a $10 million bounty.

What follows is a cutthroat, claustrophobic mess in the best way. Brutal fight scenes, mid-air mystery as Lucas tries to figure out who the Ghost is, a lot of silly billy humor and just enough heart to keep you hooked.

It’s John Wick meets Non-Stop, with a dash of Snowpiercer, or Die Hard on a plane, or Bullet Train on a plane. You get what I’m laying down.

We’ve seen these mashups before, and they certainly don’t always warrant a trip to the theater. (Some are more suitable for Redbox *RIP* or streaming.) But Hartnett is fully locked in, and it’s so much fun watching him cut up and tap into some physical comedy skills that I had no idea he possessed.

If Gerard Butler’s Plane can get a sequel, I’m hoping that Fight or Flight gets the same treatment. That means you gotta head down to that multiplex and give this a watch opening weekend. I promise you’ll have fun!
