According to The Hollywood Reporter, two of my favorite actors, Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson, are set to star in Here Comes the Flood, a new crime thriller written by Simon Kinberg and directed by City of God’s Fernando Meirelles. Daisy Edgar-Jones is also joining the cast, and Netflix is producing the project.
Details about the plot are still under wraps, but it’s being described as an unconventional heist story that unfolds in a non-linear format. It follows “a bank guard, a teller and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double-crosses.” Cons and double-crosses?! I am losing it.

Heist movies are hands-down my favorite genre, and I love when filmmakers find a fresh way to flip the format. Spike Lee’s iconic Inside Man, for example, is a masterclass in tension and misdirection. Denzel plays a savvy NYPD detective squaring off against Clive Owen’s mastermind bank robber, and the movie keeps you guessing until the very last moment. It’s super smart and endlessly rewatchable.
On the other side of the spectrum, Good Time is signature Safdie Bros. chaos that you can’t look away from. In it, Pattinson plays Connie, a small-time criminal who spends one frantic night trying to break his brother out of jail after a botched bank robbery. It’s stressful and dynamic from start to finish, and Rob, with his terrible blond due job, completely disappears into the role. It’s not your traditional heist movie, and that’s what makes it unforgettable.

So the idea of these two actors joining forces for a new twisty heist film is my cinematic dream come true. I love that it’s happening. I hate that it’s going straight to Netflix, only because that probably means there will be no physical copy for me to add to my collection. Siiiiiiigh. Same with their Fincher movies.
That minor gripe aside, I’m thrilled this project is real. Denzel has recently mentioned retirement, and if this ends up being one of his final films, what a way to go out. Watching him and Rob share the screen in a genre they’ve both helped elevate sounds pretty perfect to me.
Filming starts this fall, and I’ll be waiting patiently, most likely while rewatching Inside Man and Good Time like my life depends on it.
